Metropolitan Volunteer Opportunities
Metropolitan hosts a variety of promotional events, mostly concerts; however, speaker events, film productions, and drama performances also take place in our restored chancel space.

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to view the event and, in return, you will carry out various responsibilities. The specifics of these tasks depend on the particular group performing at each event.
With your knowledge of the facility and your smile, you are an ambassador for Metropolitan when you welcome and assist guests and performers. How we treat our visitors says who we are in our community.
General Responsibilities
For All Events
As a Metropolitan volunteer you will have specific knowledge which is of benefit to both guests and performers.
Location of washrooms
-
How to get to the balcony
-
Location of various rooms which may be in use for warm-ups or as dressing rooms (i.e., the Vineyard, the Great Room, the Parlour, the Guest Conference Room, etc.)
-
Locations of stored seat cushions
-
Location of all lit EXIT signs within the church
-
Awareness of contact person or attendant at the event
-
Other helpful things not listed
Before a Performance
Volunteers would arrive early to meet with Rob Cairns for details of the particular event. Information would include:
Details about the performing group
-
Which rooms are accessible to the group, and the purpose of those rooms (e.g., dressing room, warm-up room, green room)
-
Whether or not the kitchen may be used
-
Which entrances to the building are open for the audience to enter and exit
-
Where volunteers should be located to assist our guests
-
Expected audience size
-
Which "Other Responsibilities" listed below are in place for the event
At the End of a Performance
Metropolitan is regularly hosting events and we are also an active place of worship which always needs to be ready for Sunday services and various other church functions during the week. We ask that all volunteers assist with making sure the sanctuary and other spaces are ready for church activities at the end of the performance. End-of-Performance activities include:
-
Returning seat cushions to their storage locations
-
Straightening up the cushions in those locations (people do return them, but they don't always put them away properly)
-
Tidying up pew rows by removing leftover programs, water bottles (if water was sold at the performance), candy wrappers and other items on pew seats, under pews, and/or in wooden holders on backs of pews
-
Taking Lost-and-Found items to the office area and giving them to our door attendant; if and when people return for a lost item, it can be found in one location
-
Checking to see that hymn books and Bibles are placed properly in book holders on backs of pews. People do pick them up and look at them at non-church functions, but they don't always return them properly to our book holders
-
Checking to see that all backstage spaces (e.g., the Great Room, the Parlour, the Guest Conference Room, the Kitchen) are tidied up
Other Responsibilities
Ushers
Depending on the event, sometimes we need ushers and sometimes we don't. The candlelight concert performers come with a paid staff that sets up the candles, then become the ushers for the event. No Metropolitan church ushers are required for their concerts. However, for other concerts, e.g., Chorus London, the Ontario Youth Choir, and the Bach Elgar Choir, it is important to note that ushers are needed.
We do want volunteers at candlelight concerts for the above-stated areas of focus listed under For All Events, and At the End of Performances.
Concession Sales
Many people who arrive for performances have asked where water is located. Since we do not have a water fountain in the church, we are working towards setting up small concession stands at various locations for the sale of bottled water and possibly for small snacks which would not create a mess in the church. Volunteers to run concessions before the start of an event and during intermission will be needed.
Ticketing System
Metropolitan is able to sell tickets online for events that we organize, or to offer this as a service to rental groups. Volunteers may need to scan tickets at the doors and/or hand out programs if they have been produced for the particular event.
